Egypt has become our home away from home.
Sharm el Sheikh was our first holiday abroad together in 2015, but we first travelled Egypt ‘properly’ in 2023 when Cairo, Luxor, and Dahab were the priorities.
The mix of ancient history, pyramids, tombs, temples, hieroglyphics, with modern Islamic culture and the underwater paradise of the Red Sea is a combination that’s hard to beat!
We’ve since been back multiple times and visited Aswan, Alexandria, Siwa Oasis, and Hurghada too, but it’s Dahab where we’ve settled the longest (over 1 year across all visits)! Like many curious travellers who find themselves in Dahab, we just keep coming back!

Our Egypt Story So Far
Our Egypt story started way back in 2015, during our second year of university, when we jetted off to Sharm el Sheikh for some sun during the October holiday week. Lucy and I had been together for 7 months, and this was our first holiday abroad together, and thankfully our new relationship stood up to the holiday test!
And that closed our Egypt chapter until eight years later, in 2023, we returned for a 6-week backpacking trip where we explored Cairo, Luxor, and a little Beduin town on the Red Sea that we’d heard some whispers about, called Dahab.
Landing in Cairo at 3am, we were finally wen to sleep in our hotel in Giza at about 5am, but with limited time, there was no lie-in, and we were up early for a rooftop breakfast where we saw the Great pyramids for the first time through our bleary eyes.
And they really are a magical sight to behold!
As you might expect, Cairo was a different beast from our resort holiday in Sharm, but rather than feeling an urge to see the sights and get out quick, we really vibed with the energy, and it’s a city we always enjoy returning to.
Luxor, on the other hand, is a city we feel less passionate about, but cannot be missed as the historical sites are phenomenal! We spent a few days temple hopping and exploring the tombs of both Kings Valley and the less talked about Queens Valley.
Aswan is the next logical stop but it had to wait until next time as we caught a flight over to South Sinai, where we based ourselves in Dahab for a few weeks, and this was when Egypt’s grip on us really took hold!
A playground for divers and kitesurfers, Dahab is in its own little bubble with a rustic boho style and an energy that sees most travellers planning their return before they’ve even left!
We’ve been back multiple times in the last few years and ventured to Alexandria, Aswan, Hurghada, and Siwa Oasis, but it’s Dahab which has become our second home!
Picking highlights is very tough, but laying eyes on the pyramids for the first time, floating in Siwa’s salt pools, walking amongst the majestic columns of Karnak Temple, and cruising along the Nile are some of our absolute favourite moments!
