We ended up in Morocco for the first time in 2022 for a reason you might not expect.

After landing in Madrid at the end of our 5-month Latin America adventure, we were looking for somewhere to travel for a few weeks before heading home to Scotland. 

So, when we saw a £13 flight from Madrid to Marrakech and a £9 flight from Marrakech to Edinburgh (thank you Ryanair), the course was set. 

We dipped our toes into North African culture for the first time, and got our first taste of the fragrant souks, chaotic medinas, and the bucketlist-worthy Sahara Desert dunes. Not to mention the home-cooked tagines, addictive msemen, and sugar-laden mint tea!

But there was still so much to see and other places that we hadn’t managed to fit in, so we’ve been back twice more to explore even more of the country.

Our second trip took us further north to the ancient medina of Fes and the Blue City of Chefchaouen, as well as the southern Atlantic Coast, where we discovered the epic walled city of Essaouira, with its historic ramparts and canons overlooking the ocean. 

Then, as we continued along the coast, we ventured into Morocco’s surf scene territory and little towns like Sidi Kaouki, Imsouane, Taghazout, and Tamraght, that emanate an infectious laidback energy. The atmosphere was a complete contrast to the hectic medinas we’d been absorbed by previously!

Most recently, we hit the coast again, staying for a month in Agadir (where you can’t miss the Agadir Medina, Kasbah of Agadir Ouefella, Paradise Valley, and Crocoparc) and used it as our digital nomad base by the sea. We visited our favourites along the coast again, while also checking out the less-visited Taroudant (also known as ‘Little Marrakech)

However, there’s one place that we’ve visited every single time, and that’s the beautiful Red City of Marrakech! A photographer’s paradise, it’s also the perfect introduction to Moroccan culture. Although I agree with the Irish traveller we met in Fes, who boldly stated: “Marrakech is like Disneyland compared to Fes”. 

All in all, Morocco is a place that has ignited our sense of adventure, satisfied our taste buds, and stimulated our curious minds. 

But, even after three visits there is still more to see, and we have our eyes on Tangier, Tetouan, and Asilah on the northern coast for our next trip!
