After four visits to Albania since 2022, it’s fair to say we love the country!
I mean, with sensational beaches, epic mountains, historical Ottoman-style towns, and a rapidly developing capital city, it’s easy to understand why we keep coming back!
Our Albanian is still shocking, but we can keep working on that!

Our Albania Story So Far
We first set foot in Albania in 2022 after crossing the border from Montenegro, while following the whispers that this unassuming country was becoming the next up-and-coming European destination.
The next two weeks were spent backpacking our way from north to south, from Shkoder to Tirana to Berat to Himare to Saranda and Ksamil, while discovering sensational pebble beaches, epic mountains, historical Ottoman-style towns, and a rapidly developing capital city along the way!
Oh, and drinking our weight in strong espresso coffee that verges on rocket fuel!
The infrastructure and transport might not be as structured or streamlined as some of its Balkan neighbours, but this only added to our adventure and didn’t stop us falling in love with exploring Albania.
So much so that we’ve now visited Albania four times, including a two-month stay where we used Saranda as a coastal digital nomad base.
As much as attractions like the Blue Eye near Saranda, Butrint National Park, the Bunk Art Museums, and Porto Palermo Castle are not to be missed, it’s the beaches along the Albanian Riviera coastline that really keep us coming back again and again!
We crowned Himare’s beaches as our overall favourites, which include the unmissable Grama Bay, but the beaches in and around Saranda are up there too.
One thing’s for sure, Albania, you’ve not seen the last of us!
